HyCRISTAL is working with the Ugandan Ministry for Water and Environment (MWE) in an effort to support Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) within the Victoria Water Management Zone (WMZ).
MWE are currently undertaking a consultation process with stakeholders to assess and understand water needs and stresses in this WMZ. HyCRISTAL research on current and possible future water resources in the Katonga Catchment, within the Victoria WMZ, is informing this process. There are many drivers/motivations for IWRM, such as: meeting the future water demand for domestic use (rural and urban); meeting the future water demand for agriculture and industry to sustain growth and livelihoods; mitigating the impact of surface water flooding; sustaining hydropower; mitigating local conflict over water; environmental protection (e.g. RAMSAR wetlands).
